November 7th saw Radio General celebrate 65 years of playing music requests to the patients in the Warrington Hospital.

The service was started by the Warrington Council of Youth in 1957 and was named the 
“Warrington Hospital Request Broadcasting Scheme” when it started it had 2 live request shows a week. During the 60’s the name was changed to the present name of Radio General. After a period of inactivity, it was relaunched in December 1973.

The station has been broadcasting from the present Keith Inman Studios since 2001 and now broadcasts 24 hours a day with a mixture of live, recorded programmes and a Myriad of Music. Rugby commentaries from the Warrington Wolves & Widnes Vikings games are also broadcast. Since 2017, Radio General has been available online at radiogeneral.co.uk or via the Tune-In app. 

To celebrate their anniversary, the station had a special day broadcasting live on Monday 7th November. On Saturday 12th November, the station broadcast live from 6:00 am until 5:00 pm presenting 65 years of No.1s. and was open to visitors, past members and people who are interested in joining the team.

Many of our former members have progressed into professional broadcasting roles in radio or TV.
