Radio Harrow is your HBA Station of the Year, while Hospital Radio Chelmsford scoops three awards at this years National Hospital Radio awards, in a virtual ceremony broadcast on Saturday 20th March 2021.
The celebration of hospital, health and wellbeing broadcasters from across the country takes place annually as part of the Hospital Broadcasting Association’s (HBA) Annual Conference weekend. Despite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, many volunteers and stations put forward entries to 9 categories, highlighting the work of our member stations across the country over the past year.
Rajiv Hasan from Nottingham Hospitals’ Radio and Anna O’Brien from Winchester Radio, both take home the gold award in the category of Best Male and Best Female Presenter respectively, which is sponsored by PRS for Music.
Dan Gopal, Chief Commercial Officer, PRS for Music, said:
“Congratulations from everyone at PRS for Music to all of the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners at this year’s National Hospital Radio Awards, including Anna O’Brien of Winchester Radio and Rajiv Hasan of Nottingham Hospitals Radio, who received Gold awards in the Best Female Presenter and Best Male Presenter categories respectively. We are immensely proud to support these awards, celebrating the outstanding achievements of those involved in hospital radio nationwide. Your dedication, compassion and incredible work, during a time that has been challenging for so many, is truly appreciated.”
The hotly contested Station of the Year category, sponsored by PPL, was awarded to Radio Harrow. The judges commented that the entry highlighted a ‘strong, confident station with an entry that showed a truly great value of content’. Radio Glamorgan and Hospital Radio Basingstoke take home silver and bronze respectively.
The judges loved the use of family member voices in the gold winning entry from Hospital Radio Medway, who scooped the accolade in the category of Best Speech Package or Special Event. Runners up in this category included Hospital Radio Chelmsford and Radio Tyneside who won silver & gold respectively.
Peter Ogley, CEO of Pure said,
“At a time where hospital radio has provided much needed support to people across the country, we were honoured to be involved in the Hospital Broadcasting Awards and sponsor the Best Speech Package award. The category recognised the hospital radio stations who have produced powerful conversations with their listeners, talking about a whole host of topics. At Pure we know that radio has been a real comfort and support to people during the pandemic and these conversations are even more important than ever before.”
Elsewhere, Hospital Radio Exeter scooped Gold in Best Specialist Music Programme, Hospital Radio Chelmsford won Best Station Promotion, Winchester Radio took home the Recognising Innovation Across Hospital Radio accolade and The John Whitney Award for Outstanding Contribution was awarded to Harrogate Hospital Radio’s Mark Oldfield.
