Let me tell you about my very good friend Marshall Gellman whom I first met about 30 years ago through our connection to Northern Air Hospital Radio.

On Sunday 6th October 2019 Marshall sadly passed away aged 90. How can I describe Marshall in a few words, a real gentleman and a full of sartorial elegance, his greatest pleasure was the love of his family. Marshall along with Stanley Langer, Sidney Wander and Norman Mendelson were the founder members of Northern Air Hospital Radio in 1960.

Over the years Marshall held many positions at the station, request collector, radio presenter, outside broadcaster from the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, eventually becoming Chairman for many years. Apart from the radio, he was a long standing Rotarian and an integral part of their organisation. He also was a very passionate Manchester City fan for more years than we care to remember, from the days at Maine Road and now at The Etihad Stadium. When I became Station Manager at Northern Air, Marshall was very supportive with my plans to enhance the station, and was always at the end of the phone should I need advice.

In 2008,  Marshall entered The National Hospital Radio Awards, the category he chose was specialist music.  He was nominated and finished in the top 10 in the country – no mean feat!

I shall miss the warm and friendly greeting you always got from Marshall each time we met. He will be sadly missed by a great many people.

All our thoughts and prayers go to his wife Hilary and son Anthony and all the family at this very sad time.

Joe Sambrook,
Former Chairman.
